About Last Night 



Last Night I saw Mihali play a solo looping show at Jack Rabhors in the San Marco area of Jacksonville. It was my first time out at a concert since moving back. First small show since Covid. The Lyft there was $20, and the ride home was close to $50. I met a lot of really cool people from all over. One lady I met said she was almost at 300 different gigs over the years. She had just followed him down to St Pete for Reggae Rise Up and would later join up in Cali for the tour. I didn't get a lot of pictures. I took one of the back of the painting and another front shot with another new friend outside just as I was getting out of the Lyft. Like I need to get them to send those pictures to me didn't take a lot. After the show, I gifted Mihali the painting I did of “Empty Overflow,” which you all might recognize from some of my early promotional photos. He gave me a hug. Seeing that I was already holding back tears it was magically needed. For the past five-plus years, when I heard him work, it made me work. Much of the artwork that I share is musically inspired. Last night, to at least one of those inspirations, I got to say “thank you.”

Shroom Beach

Two years ago I painted this piece. It was a rainy Saturday afternoon. Memorial Day weekend plans to soak up the sun were substituted for a lonely afternoon indoors. The television set blaring with the sounds of reggae-rock bands streaming from a California music festival. I should have been watching the crowds of young people enjoying themselves but instead laid on the other side of the house, hiding underneath the bedframe facing the closet. The world had been spinning for some time now. The stress of so many things in my life leading me to this moment. Would someone knock that day? Would I lose my job next week? Is my car going to start? Am I losing another lifelong friend due to the fallout of the election? Will I ever find love again? Who can I call family?   This is personal 5:30 pm on Friday I'll be at a reception for emerging artists at the Carrollwood Cultural Center. I am honored to be included in this show.  A few things came to mind as I was driving away from the U-haul location, starting the adventure to deliver the pieces. The first one that came I've had this thought a few times on different things as the first words that often come to mind. And I don't want to get political when I say this, but sometimes it's so funny to do. So… My first thought was to quote the sitting president and say “This is a big fucking deal right here!” And I thought that thought instantly popped in like how big of a deal this is, a second thought instantly popped into my head to quote the last president and say that “It’s huge!” And then I got serious for a moment.
