I started painting in a back room on an old table with a chair sitting on top. I threw an old bedsheet on top of it all.  It made sense at the time for paintings to stand up. I needed space to spread out the supplies a bit. This was done March of 2019. I'm smiling because there are flowers and because it's a photo. I wasn't happy.

  This is personal 5:30 pm on Friday I'll be at a reception for emerging artists at the Carrollwood Cultural Center. I am honored to be included in this show.  A few things came to mind as I was driving away from the U-haul location, starting the adventure to deliver the pieces. The first one that came I've had this thought a few times on different things as the first words that often come to mind. And I don't want to get political when I say this, but sometimes it's so funny to do. So… My first thought was to quote the sitting president and say “This is a big fucking deal right here!” And I thought that thought instantly popped in like how big of a deal this is, a second thought instantly popped into my head to quote the last president and say that “It’s huge!” And then I got serious for a moment. Shroom Beach

Two years ago I painted this piece. It was a rainy Saturday afternoon. Memorial Day weekend plans to soak up the sun were substituted for a lonely afternoon indoors. The television set blaring with the sounds of reggae-rock bands streaming from a California music festival. I should have been watching the crowds of young people enjoying themselves but instead laid on the other side of the house, hiding underneath the bedframe facing the closet. The world had been spinning for some time now. The stress of so many things in my life leading me to this moment. Would someone knock that day? Would I lose my job next week? Is my car going to start? Am I losing another lifelong friend due to the fallout of the election? Will I ever find love again? Who can I call family? All swimming through my head at lightning speed, matching the clouds of rain pouring above the house I had grown into. Is the roof going to hold?  Is her spirit haunting this place? Dad In His Chair

Michael's has a sale this weekend. 70% off canvases and a bunch of other deals. I guess they don't think that dudes shop there. Jokes on them! With my first one I decided before my morning walk to paint a picture of my dad. It comes from a photo I grew up seeing. In the photo he's sitting in one of those 70s egg chairs with the speakers on the side. I actually still have the chair. In the painting I didn't put eyes on dad. That's because I never got to know what color they were. He died a year after I was born. At 43 now without children of my own I feel people on seeing this being a hallmark holiday. Truth be told they all are in some ways marketing ploys. But they are also times to reflect and give thanks for where this journey has brought each of us. Mine has me thinking I might try out another photo for a closer look at that face at some point. I did pick up some paint and canvases.... #shamanicinnovations  #blackartists #folk
